The Sheriff Takes a Bride: Las Morenas #2.5 (Las Morenas #2.5) by Genevieve Turner

THE SHERIFF TAKES A BRIDE by Genevieve Turner is the engaging tale of former sheriff Joaquin Obregon who was shot protecting his fiancée from criminals. It is now a year after the crime and Joaquin has been in a sanatorium recuperating from his injuries, physical and psychological. His family have stopped visiting him and his fiancée marries another leaving Joaquin angry and desolate and he is being cared for by a nurse who would rather not have to deal with him. What  does he have to live for if he can no longer be a lawman and have the woman he chose for a wife?

Nurse Mary Margaret McCallahan found Joaquin Obregon to be arrogant. The man survives when all the odds were against his survival and still he doesn't grasp that he has life. Having been brought up in poverty, not knowing where her next meal was coming from, Mae, is determined to never go through that again. Rising above, Mae went to school to become a nurse and she will be damned if anyone will reign her in. When Nurse McCallahan is giving the chance to rise even higher by taking Mr. Obregon on a camping trip in hopes of furthering his recovery, she hesitantly takes on the task .

During the camping trip in the wilds of California, the orderly who was given the job as guide and helper abandons Joaquin and Mae, leaving them to attempt to trudge back to the sanatorium by foot in the heat and being left to the elements. While on their quest for survival, Joaquin and Mae discover that underneath the apparent facade lies a depth that each would like to discover of the other.  But until Joaquin can deal with the fact that being sheriff was not his only lot in life, there is no future with the determined nurse who will allow nothing to get in the way of a better life.

THE SHERIFF TAKES A BRIDE is an engaging novella in the continuing Las Morenas series by Genevieve Turner. This actually is a story I was very eager to read as I really wanted to come to know Joaquin Obregon and his plight. His despair over the outcome of his life and realizations that his life must go forward much differently than he has once planned is a great journey as well as Mae's resolve for a better life. The Las Morenas series is a well written and insightful series into a culture we not often read about and I recommend it.

Review & Author Spotlight: The Courtesan Duchess (Wicked Deceptions #1) by Joanna Shupe

"I wonder if you truly possess the skill to back up your arrogance."
His eyes heated to liquid silver. "If you find a private alcove, I'll happily demonstrate my abilities before the end of the performance. After all, it's only fair to know what you're getting"
______________________________

Before I begin my review of Joanna Shupe's debut novel THE COURTESAN DUCHESS, I need to first say that this book is one of the best debuts of the year and I am not saying that lightly. Joanna Shupe is eloquent and entertaining and her voice is relevant. I cannot wait for more from her.

Having been tossed aside soon after her marriage at the tender age of sixteen by her equally immature husband, Julia, the Duchess of Colton isn't going to take it anymore, and with good reason. Julia is in need of conceiving an heir to the Colton dynasty and quickly, for she has her estranged husband's cousin is in hot pursuit of his title. In an effort to thwart Templeton's actions, Julia sells her jewelry and hires premiere courtesan Pearl Kelly to assist her in seducing said husband. Julia transforms herself from the quiet and forgotten Duchess of Colton into Mrs. Juliet Leighton, temptress extraordinaire who follows Nicholas Francis Seaton, the seventh Duke of Colton to Italy where he has been entertaining himself as of late.

When Nick sees the seductress he has no idea she is the wife he abandoned eight years prior. He is however fascinated by the creature and determined to have her. Colton was never destined to become Duke, but when his brother died suddenly after a scandal involving Nick, his father attempted to bring Nicholas in line and part of that control was having him marry Julia. The Depraved Duke as Nick is known by the ton, wants nothing to do with England or his wife. He would rather her find other distractions while he finds his own.

Colt begins his chase to have Juliet, for the obvious desire they share for one another will not be dashed. At first, Julia/Juliet is clearly out of her element, even with the lessons she has prepared herself with, but soon she catches on. She must remember that Colton is a means to an end, preferably an end with her living out her existence in peace as a mother.  That means to an end could be so much more if the Duchess and the Duke just take a good look at one another inside.

THE COURTESAN DUCHESS by Joanna Shupe is not to be missed. A wonderful story with so many twists and turns, it is clearly for the discerning reader. Watching the progression Julia and Nicholas go through to become the couple they were meant to be is a glorious challenge so brilliantly brought to light by Ms. Shupe. Having become so thoroughly captivated by THE COURTESAN DUCHESS, I am eager to dive in to the next book in the series THE HARLOT COUNTESS.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am a historical romance author by night. By day, I am the communications coordinator for a non-profit. I live in New Jersey with my two little girls and my amazing husband.
I grew up in Ohio, went to college in Florida, and spent the first six years after college in Chicago before moving to New York City. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to live in so many different places and meet all kinds of different people. It’s made me a better writer.

Tell us how The Courtesan Duchess came to be.
I wanted to write a reunion story, which can be tricky. There has to be a good reason that the two are not together, with transgressions that the reader can overcome in order to like the character and root for the happily ever after. But I needed the hero to be bad, just an unredeemable rake that had a long way to go before she would finally take him back. That’s why THE COURTESAN DUCHESS opens the way it does, because I wanted the first glimpse the heroine had of the hero (after 8 years of “marriage”) to be completely shocking to her.

What are you currently working on?
I’m working on my next series, The Knickerbocker Club, which is set in 1888 New York City during the period called The Gilded Age. It’s the era of robber barons, lavish parties, giant mansions, and the explosion of technology and industry that made our country what it is today. It’s my favorite period in history, and I’m so excited for readers to take the journey with me. All four heroes will be robber barons, the bad boy billionaires of their day.
The first full-length book, MAGNATE, should be out in May 2016, but there will be an e-novella, TYCOON, sometime in early 2016.

Did you always want to be a writer? If not, what did you want to be?
I’ve always wanted to be a writer. I went to college and received a journalism degree. My plan was to be a sports writer. That didn’t pan out, but I never stopped writing. My very first manuscript was written right after I graduated college, while I was still waiting tables.

Who was your favorite character to write and why?
My favorite character to write was Quint, a good friend of the Duke of Colton and the hero of the third book, THE LADY HELLION. Quint is socially awkward but a genius. He refuses to have a valet, so his clothes are rumpled and mismatched. If he’s involved in a project, he goes days without eating. He also says whatever he thinks, regardless of how it might be perceived by others. I had to research a LOT for his book, because I’m nowhere near as smart as he is, but that part was fun.

Who are your role models/favorite authors? If so, who?
I started reading historical back in the day of Johanna Lindsey and Amanda Quick, so those are some of my favorite books. Eloisa James was a revelation for me, as were Joanna Bourne and Sarah MacLean. Their stories are so well crafted.
Sabrina Jeffries is one of my favorite historical authors as well, and she is so consistently good that it’s scary. Meeting her was a lot of fun, and she was very generous with her time as well as gave me great advice.

Where can you fans meet you?
Where can’t I be found, is the better question! My favorite place to hang out is Twitter (@joannashupe) but I can be found on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/joannashupeauthor), GoodReads (https://www.goodreads.com/joanna_shupe) and Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/joannashupe/). My website (http://www.joannashupe.com/) contains all kinds of goodies for readers, like character profiles, book notes, and deleted scenes. Also, you can sign up for my newsletter there. I don’t send it often, only when I have news to share, and my subscribers get special perks like advance peeks and contests.
In person, I’ll be at the RT Convention in Dallas from May 13-16, and also at the RWA Conference in New York City from July 22-25. Please, stop by and say hi if you see me!

*SIDE NOTE*  Joanna will also be at Lady Jane Salon in Lancaster, PA on May 31 and the #BOC Beach BBQ Bash on Long Island after the RWA and we are very excited to have her!

           What are you reading?
I read all the time and usually more than one thing at a time. Right now, I just finished Annabeth Albert’s adorable debut m/m romance, SERVED HOT. I’m in the middle of Jennifer McQuiston’s HER HIGHLAND FLING novella, re-reading Edith Wharton’s THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, and critiquing a friend’s romantic suspense manuscript.

       What is next for you?
I’m not sure what I’ll do after the Knickerbocker series wraps up. A lot depends on whether readers get behind the series. If they do, I’d love to stay in that time period. I have an idea for a contemporary I’d like to write as well. So we’ll see!

What would you like readers to know about you?

The goal for me as an author is to write a book that is like a fun-filled, fast-paced roller coaster. (But a sexy roller coaster, if there is such a thing.) Those are the kind of books I love. Also, while I love history, I’m not perfect. Any errors in the books are mine.

Nathan's mother gave a new meaning to the mommy dearest moniker and even though she is long gone, she still has her clutches on Nathan's psyche. To him women are all conniving liars.

Sophia Vane's life has been one trial after the other, and unless she can free herself and her nine year old brother from their father, Frank's grip, their existences are only bound to get worse. Sophia has basically lived a life of servitude to Frank since birth and the corrupt man will use his children in any way he can for monetary gain.

In his travels, Nathaniel saves Sophia from being accosted in Frank's tavern, she thanks him and in return offers to aid him in finding a local address in order to purchase a horse. On the way danger strikes, leaving Nathan shot and Sophia his only aid. Once Sophia has Nathan safely away in Frank's tavern following doctor's orders for his survival, she realizes Frank has a truly nefarious plan to get rid of her and become rich in the process.

When the duke becomes aware of Frank's plan he denies the knave and tries to return to London without further trouble. However, once again seeing Sophia in need, his honor takes over and he frees Sophia and her brother from more pain. Marrying Sophia is the only remedy to the situation but Sophia wants love, not just convenience.

Once Nathan has Sophia in his home he is at a loss. Bringing this girl from the working class and making him his duchess is bound to cause issues, but he is determined to make the most of it. As time passes, Nathan comes to see that Sophia is nothing like the typical women who have wreaked havoc on his life, but she is witty, intelligent and a force to be reckoned with.

Just as they begin to settle into their lives tragedy strikes leaving Sophia suddenly alone and Nathan enslaved. Will Sophia be able to continue on in the role that Nathan gave her? Will Nathan survive the insurmountable odds that keep coming his way. The only way to find out this and so much more is to grab MY SEDUCTIVE INNOCENT by Julie Johnstone and dive in.

I'm pretty sure that just by my summary you can tell I LOVE this book. Author Julie Johnstone has written a brilliant story of love overcoming all the odds. Sophia may be my favorite heroine to date. Her sheer will and fortitude makes everyone around her take notice, especially the one man who never wanted a wife. Nathan is such a contradiction with his verbal denials while demonstrating his caring personality. Apart they are really strong characters, but together they are intense. MY SEDUCTIVE INNOCENT is a winner on all levels and I strongly recommend it to all.

Well you will just have to grab Erica Ridley's The Captain's Bluestocking Mistress to find out!

Once I started this story by Erica Ridley, there was no putting it down. I simply intrigued with the premise and how Jane's dilemma would be solved. Both Jane and Xavier are strong and lovable characters whose personal tales of woe are so engaging. The Captain's Bluestocking Mistress is the second in  the Dukes of War series and it is a great read.

Review of Pleasured by Candace Camp

Just as the Munro women who came before her, Meg Munro has been the healer for the people of Kinclannoch in the beautiful Scottish highlands. The beautiful Meg lives carefree  and answers to no one, exactly like her mother and her mother before her. Munro women do not marry, even if they find true love.

The minute the widowered Damon, the earl of Marduin returns to his family estate with his young daughter in tow, he sees the village healer he has to have her in his bed. His pursuit of the high spirited lass however is riddled with constant refusal. Damon isn't used to being turned down and he steps up his quest for her surrender consumes him to distraction.
Even though Meg suffers a strong attraction to Damon, she resists.  Damon's belief that since Meg lives on her own and comes and goes as she pleases, that she is no innocent. This does not help his pursuit.

When Meg can no longer resist Damon, they both experience passion neither knew could exist, but what is a lowly village healer and an Earl to do when so much rides against them? Sometimes passion and desire isn't enough to overcome  differences. Or can it? Find out by grabbing Pleasured by Candace Camp to find out.

Pleasured by Candace Camp is a sweeping historical romance that uses the beauty and mystery of the Scottish highlands to bring together two people of such different worlds. From the very first I adored Meg Munro and her tenacious will. Who wouldn't love a carefree slip of a woman who goes by the moniker Red Meg Munro? Meg's beauty and intelligence melt the earl's cool exterior until she has him firmly under his spell. Damon is not your typical peer of the realm and his relationship with his daughter and those around him proves that. His dark and brooding figure commands attention but Meg will not fawn over him. I love the jibes and banter between them. It adds so much to story, and what a wonderful story it is.

Don't miss this fantastic romantic sequel to Prohibited!

EXCERPT:

Evie made her way to Jack’s office, rehearsing her words in her mind. She would ask him in a strong voice, letting him know that it was simply a favor, and only that she needed an escort, nothing more. She wouldn’t sigh or melt in his presence, she would remind him that she was engaged to be married. She told herself all these things as she walked.

And forgot them promptly when she arrived at Jack’s open office door. He stood in the far corner, looking for something in his bookshelf, his dark hair and strong back to her. The cut of his suit revealed the taper of his waist, the broad expanse of his shoulders. He leaned over slightly to look on a lower shelf, and Evie was struck again by the way he moved – like a dangerous animal.

She watched him search as long as she dared, and then cleared her throat.

Jack spun around, surprised, and an expression of wonder crossed his face before it was quickly replaced with his usual cool facade. ‘Miss McKenzie,’ he said, his voice a silvery rumble. ‘What a nice surprise.’

Evie felt self-conscious in front of Jack, as she always had. At least back in the days when he’d been a club proprietor and she’d been a debutante sneaking out of her parents’ house, she’d had the buzz of alcohol to cover her discomfort. Here, in the light of day in an office at the University, she had no such help. ‘I hope you’ll forgive the intrusion,’ she said.

Jack crossed the small room, and gestured to a chair in front of the large dark wooden desk.

‘No intrusion,’ he said, still not smiling. There was amusement dancing in his eyes, though. He knew how unsettling his presence was to Evie.

She sat as indicated, and then stared at her hands for a long moment. Finally, she remembered her promises to herself. Strong, decisive. Just asking for a favor. ‘I ...’ She felt incapable of speech.

‘Are you concerned about your grade, Miss McKenzie?’

She looked up at him. ‘Please, Jack. Call me Evie.’

The line of his lips softened, and something in his eyes warmed. He nodded slightly.

‘That’s not it. I came because I’d hoped you might be willing ... that you might, ah ...’

‘I’m willing,’ he said quickly, taking the chair beside her.

She laughed. ‘But you don’t know what I’m about to ask!’

‘You’re nervous,’ he said, smiling. ‘So I have a few ideas what you might be about to ask.’

‘Well, it’s a favor, really. It’s just ... It’s something Roger can’t do for me.’

‘I believe there might be a good number of things that Roger can’t do for you.’ Jack raised an eyebrow.

Evie felt the color crawl up her cheeks. She cleared her throat as Jack leaned forward slightly. ‘Well, you see, there’s a ball. And I need an escort. It’s for work.’ She added the last part quickly and then regretted it.

‘Work? I didn’t realize you had a job, Evie. Tell me, what is it that you do?’

Every word from his lips sounded as if it dripped with suggestion, though the words themselves were not incendiary in any way. Evie felt as if she’d need a bath once she finally left his presence; the reactions he caused within her were humiliating and seemingly uncontrollable. She crossed her legs tightly.

‘Yes, well.’ She pulled at the collar of her blouse, though it was nowhere near her neck. ‘I’m a reporter, actually. And this is a political affair, so I’ll need to go and speak with some people ...’ She felt as if she were rambling, but Jack seemed to hang on each word. ‘Will you take me, Jack?’

Jack smiled wide. ‘I would like nothing more.’ He said it simply, and there seemed to be no subterfuge in his words or his manner. Evie suspected it was the first honest sentiment he’d ever offered her. ‘Tell me when to come for you.’

Evie dug the invitation from her bag and held it out to Jack. He took it from her grasp, letting his long fingers overlap hers for a brief moment. The touch sent chills through Evie and an embarrassing wetness developed between her legs. She pulled her thighs together more tightly.

‘This weekend?’ Jack mused. ‘Not much notice. I think that will be fine, though. Shall I pick you up at your parents’ house?’

Oh God, her parents! Evie hadn’t thought of what a stir having Jack arrive at her house might cause. ‘No,’ she said, her mind spinning. ‘I’ll meet you at Maison. In front.’

‘That doesn’t seem proper.’

‘I’m engaged. There’s a lot about this that isn’t proper.’

Jack smiled again, and this time the devilish look returned to his eye. ‘True,’ he said. ‘I’ll wait for you there on Friday, then.’

‘Thank you, Jack.’ She said the words quietly, and Jack leaned in, as if he was absorbing them from the very air between them.

He stood and stepped before her, holding out a hand in offering. She took his hand and rose to face him, aware of the searing heat of his touch on her hand, his solid form just inches from her.

His grip on her hand tightened slightly and he moved forward, just enough that their bodies were practically touching.

Evie knew she should step away. She should turn and leave Jack’s office, go back to her life. She was an engaged woman. But when Jack inclined his head slightly and his hot breath danced along her neck, she felt her reserve failing. When Jack’s tongue darted out and rimmed the edge of Evie’s ear, her knees threatened to give. And when his strong hand found its way around the small of her back, drawing her against the full length of his body, she knew there was no going back.

‘I ...’ She tried to fight it, but there was no fight in her.

‘I know.’ Jack’s voice was soothing, and the hardness of his body against her was overwhelming. Evie couldn’t help herself. Her arms went around him, her hands finding the tense, firm muscles of his back as her head tilted back in surrender.

GUEST BLOGGER STACEY AGDERN ON ROMANCE AND COUNTRY MUSIC

Hi!  I’m Stacey, and I’m a huge fan of both country music and romance novels.  Both things are treated by mainstream society with a heaping degree of scorn, and most of the time, both are seen by the other fandom as a last bastion of potential acceptance.  The country music lover who snarks about romance novels they haven’t (and never will read), and the romance reader who thinks country music is the worst possible genre to love(despite the fact they’ve never listened to a note). Yet when reality sets in, fans of country music and romance novels are more similar than they would ever think.
First, when scorned by mainstream media, we create media sources that will cover and review examples of our favorite items.  Scorned by the mainstream media. Romance novels are reviewed by tons of adamant and excited bloggers, from excited readers to publisher and mainstream media backed websites.  There is even a pretty mainstream magazine, as well as a brand new fanzine.  Country music has a similar system of reviews, from country divisions of mainstream magazines to a whole network of country music devoted radio and television stations.
Second, when excluded by mainstream award shows, we create our own.  The RITA awards, the RNA prize, the ACM, the CMA and the CMT buckle (and more) showcase the best our favorite medium has to offer.
Third, we give other fans a chance to gather and meet each other in a safe space.  Multi author signings attached to conferences, huge multi-day events and Fanfest.  Each allows creator and excited fans a chance to interact, even for a little while.
We are outsiders, doing things that are outside the purview and the interest of mainstream media.  And for lovers of both romance novels and country music, if what we love is wrong, we do not want to be right.

BLOG TOUR, REVIEW & SPOTLIGHT ON ~ LADY VICE by WENDY LACAPRA ~ SPECIAL GIVEAWAY~

When Lady Lavinia Vaile's estranged husband ends up shot to death in a manner in which Lavinia had previously threatened, her former love interest, Maximilian Harrison steps in to make sure Lavinia remains safe and out of the authority's hands. Since her estrangement from Lord Vaile, Lady Lavinia has taken up with a few ladies of questionable reputations. Lady Vice (Lavinia), Lady Scandal and the Duchess of Decadence, also known as the Furies, run private salons that provide gambling among other rumored entertainments.

Max has always loved Lavinia, but when he went off to India for his career and Lavinia entered into a horrible marriage, all seemed final. When Max returns from India, he sees Lavinia from afar and those feelings he always had for her rise to the surface once more. When she faces accusations of murder, Max risks his stellar reputation to prove her innocence and once in each other's company, the love they once shared blossoms once again, and this time will not be suppressed.

Even with her reputation in tatters, Lavinia has kept her head held high with the help of her friends. Keeping the treatment she suffered at her husband's hands a secret however becomes moot, when Max comes to understand what she has been through, and his deeply ingrained need to protect Lavinia makes him a first rate hero.

This debut novel by author, Wendy LaCapra is a stunning presentation. Lady Vice entices and intrigues with an outstanding story and fascinating characters. This wonderfully written story quickly became one of my favorites and I yearn for the next story in the Furies series.

SPOTLIGHT ON WENDY LACAPRA
BOC: Hi Wendy and welcome to Book Obsessed Chicks
WENDY: Hi Kimberly! I’m so excited to be on Book Obsessed Chicks.

BOC: For those readers who don’t know you, could you tell us a bit about yourself?
WENDY: I’m a NJ native-turned-New-Yorker who spent a decade or so in Boston honing my office management skills. On the creative side, I’ve always wanted to write romance, even before I understood it was a genre. Historical romance is my passion and I consider myself as much a reader as a writer.

BOC: How did you come up with the idea for Lady Vice?
WENDY: I read a book on the life of Lady Worsley which opened up the seedy world of the Georgian demi-monde to me. I’d been trying to write sweet debutante-at-Almacks stories for ages, but when the Furies (The three ladies in Lady Vice who band together to survive outside society’s strict conventions) were born, everything clicked.

BOC: Do you have a favorite character in Lady Vice?
WENDY: I don’t. I love all three Furies and the men they love (or will love!). After spending so much time with Max, the hero of Lady Vice who is yummy and handsome and honorable to his core, writing Lord Randolph, the hero of the second book, was a bit of a thrill. He’s dark and dangerous and very, very sensual.

BOC:Who are your favorite authors?
WENDY:My newest favorite is Alyssa Alexander. Perennial favorites are Gaelen Foley, Elizabeth Hoyt, Jo Beverley, Miranda Neville, Mary Balogh, Joanna Bourne, Eileen Dreyer and, on the lighter side, Tessa Dare, Sally MacKenzie and Eloisa James. Early favorites were Victoria Holt, Jane Aiken Hodge, Judith Ivory & Laura Kinsale. I could go on but then I’d fill up the whole page.

BOC:What are you reading?
WENDY: I just finished listening to the Audible version of As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride. Oh my. ANY fan of that movie has to get the audio version. To listen to Cary Elwes read his stories feels almost like being the Fred Savage character in the movie. That voice of his…oh my! I’m slowly reading Dear Sugar (which is far too intense to take in all at once). And, I hope to get back to Ann Lethbridge’s Captured Countess soon. Next up? What A Duke Dares by Anna Campbell. Then Trade Me by Courtney Milan.

BOC: What is next for you?
WENDY: Lady Scandal will release later this year and the Duchess Decadence will wrap up The Furies series.

BOC: Where can readers find you on the web and meet you in person in 2015?
WENDY: I’ll be at the Liberty States Fiction Writers Conference in Woodbridge NJ on March 21-22, Lady Jane’s Salon at Madame X in NYC April 6 and, hopefully, the Romance Festival at the Morris-Jumel mansion in NYC on June 20th. On the web I’m at www.wendylacapra.com, Facebook https://www.facebook.com/WendyLaCapraAuthor, Goodreads https://www.goodreads.com/wendylacapra, Twitter https://twitter.com/wendylacapra, Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/wendylacapra/

Thank you again for having me!

Wendy LaCapra has been reading romance since she sneaked into the adult section at the library and discovered Victoria Holt & Jane Aiken Hodge.  From that point on, she dreamed of creating fictional worlds with as much richness, intrigue and passion as she found within those books. Her stories have placed in several contests, including the 2012 Golden Heart®. She lives in NYC with her husband and loves to hear from readers.

Book Blurb:

Not every lady plays by the rules.

Lady Lavinia Vaile knows what happens to a woman who puts her faith in society. For her, it was a disastrous marriage to a depraved man-one she threatened to shoot when she left him. Now Lavinia lives outside of society’s strict conventions, hosting private gambling parties. It’s only when her husband is shot dead that Lavinia finds herself in terrible danger…

A former judge in India’s high court, Maximilian Harrison will do anything he can to help Lavinia. In the darkest of times, he held on to thoughts of her and the love they once shared. Now he risks his own position in society―along with his ambitions―in order to clear her name. Yet as desire reignites between them, Lavinia remains caught up in secrets and shame. Her only salvation is to do the unthinkable…and trust in both Maximilian and love.
