#BOC SPOTLIGHT ON AUTHOR: CATHERINE HEMMERLING

Their unexpected marriage will either end in rapture… or ruin.
London, 1814
Sarah Jardin has been quite dreadfully in love with David Rochester her whole life. As the youngest of five daughters, her family and society neglect her. She’s outspoken, brash, and terribly ungraceful. In short, not at all a lady…until she’s taken under the benevolent wing of Lady Lancaster and invited to join the Young Ladies Garden Society.
But Sarah’s new life—filled with the mysteries and intrigues of high society—is interrupted by an unexpected scandal. Her scandal. In a moment of kindness, David comforts her…and they are discovered and forced to marry. Even as the newlyweds must come to terms with their new arrangement, they find themselves drawn into the investigation of a dangerous conspiracy.
With life and love on the line, their unexpected marriage will either end in rapture…or ruin.

Welcome to the Book Obsessed Chicks blog, Catherine.  Thanks for being here today.

  1. Please tell us a bit about yourself
Well, I'm 5'11, blond, and a capricorn...oh, wait, this isn't a date, is it? Let's see...I'm new to this author thing. I published my first book in 2012. It was the first book in the Lady Lancaster series. I had been a technical writer for decades, but my dream has always been to be a novelist. I still can't believe this is real.

  1. What are you currently working on?
I have two books in the works at the moment. The fifth book in the Lady Lancaster series and the first book in a new detective series. The new series is set in the current time and I find it a challenge to change up my writing style from regency language to modern. Surprisingly the older style seems to come more naturally to me. How crazy is that?

  1. What’s your favorite genre to write?
I have ideas that cross lots of genre lines, but they all seem to have certain things in common. Like humor. Even in a primarily dramatic or suspenseful setting, there is always humor. There is in real life, there should be in stories. If forced to choose, I love a good love story, so romance might just edge out mystery.

  1. Did you always want to be a writer? If not, what did you want to be?
Oh, yes. I have always wanted to be a writer. As a youngster, I would write all sorts of fantastical and then create dolls of the main characters. I'm sure my mom still has them somewhere. Second choice would have been teacher, in case you were wondering.

5) What’s your favorite food? I love, love, love Mexican food. I am addicted to candy and Dr. Pepper, but recently quit both cold turkey. In fact, I quit all sodas. It's been a challenge, but hopefully I'll be healthier for the effort.

  1. Do you have any pet peeves? If so, what are they?
It really bugs when I see a shirt tag up. I have to fix it, whether I know the person wearing the shirt or not. It embarrasses my family, but nobody wearing the shirt has ever been anything but grateful. I'm also a little (ok, maybe a lot) OCD about grammar and formatting. When things don't line up... or if you use the wrong there, their, they're, etc... my head feels like it's going to explode. I think this is a writer thing.

  1. Who was your favorite character to write and why?
I love writing Sarah Jardin. I am tall and clutzy and apparently I don't have a filter either, so writing her is cathartic. Besides, I enjoy a bit of comic relief and she always seems prepared to provide that. I'm also in love with a man named David, so that's something. I aspire to be Lady Lancaster though.

  1. What’s your favorite television show?
Wow, tough question. There are so many that I like. I guess Criminal Minds is up there. Also Bones, The Walking Dead, and Drop Dead Diva. I tend to be drawn towards cop shows (CSI, Law and Order, Person of Interest, etc.). I'm not sure why, but I've always loved a good mystery, so maybe that's it.

  1. Do you have any role models? If so, who?
Probably the person who had the most impact on me was my Auntie Anne. I actually dedicated one of my earlier books to her. She was not only an amazing woman with a fabulous sense of humor, the battle with cancer was the most inspiring thing I have ever seen. Throughout her experience, she was loving, supportive, and focused on all her family. She never seemed angry, bitter, or unavailable. I suffer from a chronic illness and watching her strength and character persevere over the cancer, convinced me that I couldn't let my issues control me and who I want to be. Eventually she lost her battle and I still miss her every day.

  1. What’s your favorite holiday?
Oh, Halloween, hand's down. I love playing dress up.

  1. Who’s your ‘famous’ crush? That one actor/actress that melts your butter?!
I have to go with John Cusack. I have loved him since the 80's. I will watch anything he is in.

  1. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I've been to Europe, but haven't yet made it to England. I would love to see all the places I reference in my books in real life. Hopefully, someday.

  1. Please tell us a bit about your current book…
This book is Sarah's book. All my books can be read as stand-alones, but if you read any of my previous books, you will have met Sarah. She is the kindest soul, stuffed into a very precariously put together body. In this book, you get to know how she became the outspoken, clumsy girl you have seen in the earlier stories. She has been in love with her best friend's brother for years, but he doesn't return the feelings in the least. But he is kind to her, kinder than most. David is not sure why he cares about Sarah's feelings, but he does. He chalks it up being a gentleman. His gentlemanly nature, ends up getting the two of them in trouble and they spend the rest of the book trying to see if they can live with this trouble. Luckily, they are distracted by a friend in need. The question is, can they find love in the midst of a curious mystery?
