Kat Martin's BEYOND REASON & the Question: Why Romantic Suspense?

She’s determined to be successful--no matter
who tries to stop her

Someone is willing to kill for control of Drake Trucking, a well-respected firm now run by a woman named Carly Drake.  Big money is involved.  And very big danger.
Multi-millionaire Lincoln Cain is determined to keep the promise he made her grandfather, the man who helped him change his life after he got out of prison.  Cain has vowed to protect Carly, no matter what it takes.

Unfortunately, the only way to keep her safe is to keep her close--and fight like crazy.

Beyond Reason

Excerpt

The helicopter flight back was quick and uneventful.  By the time they reached the ranch house and she made her way into the kitchen, her heart hurt and despair had her mouth so dry she could barely speak.
As if he had some kind of special Carly radar, Linc followed her and just stood watching.
“What happened today?” he asked, the unnatural calmness in his tone putting her on alert.  “Something happened that changed things between us.  What was it?”
He was amazingly perceptive.  She thought about lying, but it wasn’t worth the effort.
“Sophia happened.  She reminded me of the way things really are.”
“Sophia Aiello?”  He frowned.  “What does Sophia have to do with anything?”
“She came to see you.  You didn’t have time for her, but I’m sure she’ll forgive you.”
“I’ve never slept with Sophia.”
“You have a date with her next week.  Were you going to tell me the truth or make something up?”
A knot of anger surfaced in his jaw.  “It’s just a PR stunt to raise money.  I have no interest in a woman like that.”
She didn’t believe him.  She wished she’d never met him.
“I want to go home.  I’ll sleep in one of the other bedrooms tonight, but tomorrow I’m going home.”
His jaw went harder.  “You’re not leaving.  I’m not letting you put yourself in that kind of danger.”
“You can’t tell me what to do.”
“You don’t think so?  I’ll tell you this--I’m not letting some spoiled, self-absorbed female I don’t give a damn about ruin what’s happening between us.”
Her head came up.  “Nothing’s happening.  It’s just sex.”
“Is it?”  He stalked toward her, caught her shoulders.  He was mad, furious.  She didn’t understand why he was so angry.
“I don’t know where this is going.  But if Sophia upset you that badly, I mean more to you than just sex.  We’re going to see where this leads.  We’re not going to let other people decide the outcome.”
He fisted a hand in her hair to hold her in place and his mouth crushed down over hers.  She pressed her hands against his powerful chest and told herself to stop him, that he was just saying the words every woman wanted to hear.
But what if she was wrong?  What if Linc was the one man who was exactly what he seemed?  She wanted to believe it so badly.
Carly struggled against him, but the heat was too much, the yearning too strong.  She kissed him back with all the need she felt for him, all the hunger.  She whimpered when Linc broke away.
“Another thing you should know.  I’m not above using sex to get what I want.  Since I know how much you like sex with me, I’m going to remind you exactly why you decided to stay with me in the first place.”
When Linc kissed her again, Carly closed her eyes and let the storm of passion roll over her.

Why Romantic Suspense?

I love novels that include both romance and suspense/thriller elements.  I like the extra depth it gives the story.  From the start, I envision the book being as much about the developing relationship between the hero and heroine as solving the suspense/thriller mystery.  There is intrigue in both.  How will the protagonists extricate themselves from danger?  Will the hero and heroine overcome their emotional problems and be able to forge a future together?  And though the reader may know the answer, the idea is to make the journey worth the read.
Beyond Reason is a slightly different book for me, a bigger novel in some ways.  Because the story deals with regular people not detectives, bodyguards, or anyone in the security business, trouble doesn’t start when a client with a problem walks through the front door.  The characters have to develop.  The stage has to be set.  The peril has to build.  It’s a big, bold adventure, and once it gets rolling, it’s high-action, face-paced danger I hope will keep readers turning the pages.
Beyond Reason is the first book of three.  It revolves around tough, self-made multi-millionaire Lincoln Cain as he clashes with his determined competition, Carly Drake.  The second book, Beyond Danger, involves Linc’s mega-rich business partner, former race car driver, Beaumont Reese.  Accused of murder, Beau desperately needs the help of lady detective, Cassidy Jones.  The third novel centers on Linc’s brother, Joshua Cain, a former Marine sniper returned to Texas to heal and find some measure of peace--which Josh does not get.
I liked the diversity of these three books, though there is a common element that ties them altogether, something I’ll let readers find out for themselves.
I hope you enjoy Beyond Reason and that you’ll watch for the other two books in my Texas Trilogy.  Until next time, all best and happy reading, Kat

Marry a sheikh in return for a hefty financial reward? Jane Smith, a shy researcher, normally would have laughed in Zayed Al Zawba’s handsome face. Except it’s only for six months and the money will rescue her sister, who’s caught up in debt.
Sheikh Zayed will do anything to inherit Kafalah’s neighboring oil-rich lands. Even if he has to wed plain Jane, though he’ll never long to consummate a marriage with her. THE SHEIKH’S BOUGHT WIFE by Sharon Kendrick
1)      What is your favorite part about writing The Sheikh’s Bought Wife?
I felt very fortunate with this particular story because it almost seemed to write itself.  Both characters came to me fully formed and were eager to tell their story.  I must add that this does not happen very often!

2)      What was challenging about writing this book?
The challenging part was in making an outrageous and misogynistic hero come good at the end.  Also, it was crucial to the story that Jane really did fall in love with Zayed, because he is the kind of man she despises.  But then she gets to know him…

3)      How would you describe the relationship between Zayed and Jane?
I would describe Zayed and Jane’s relationship as tempestuous.  He is a playboy and she is a prude.  He loves sex and she’s never had sex.  They are both distrustful around each other but then the layers begin to get peeled away and what you are left with is a red-hot love-affair which was never intended to happen.

4)      How did you come up with their names? Do they mean anything specific?
Character names are very important to me and this book was no different in that respect.  One of the meanings of Zayed is “in abundance” and I thought that was very appropriate because he certainly has lots of things in abundance….sex appeal, money & land, for starters.  The one things he’s never had is love.

Jane was chosen specifically because the heroine is plain – but of course, by the end of the book we discover that she is the most beautiful woman in the world in the eyes of her Sheikh!

5)      How long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
I sometimes spend weeks mulling over an idea and once it has grown I try to add to it.  I go and watch films and read books and magazines.  Whichever country I use (or invent) for the story, I then try to immerse myself in it.  Often, I use only a fraction of the things I’ve researched but the knowledge I’ve gained helps inform my writing.

6)      How long does it typically take for you to write a book?
I write four books for Harlequin every year, for the best-selling Presents imprint.

7)      If you didn’t write, what would you do for work?
I would be a potter!  I absolutely love working with clay.

8)      When did you first realize that you wanted to be writer?
When I was about seven years old my teachers always used to read my stories out loud.  I discovered that writing was the thing I was best at – and, even better – I loved it.  I still do.

9)      What is your favorite thing about writing romance?
I love creating characters and conflict and inventing a different world every time I write a book.  Bringing two warring lovers together for a dramatic and mutually satisfying ending to their story is a great feeling.

10)  What book are you currently reading right now?
I’m reading THIS MUST BE THE PLACE, by Maggie O’ Farrell – who is the most superb writer and comes from Ireland (where my mother was born).  I am also reading ITALIAN IN 30 DAYS, because I’m supposed to be learning the language at evening class.  I’m not very good but I try!

How-to Tips for Aspiring Writers: Tips for those looking to get their work published/break into the industry.

  • Know what’s out there in the market-place, and before you start writing – read, read, read.  If it’s your first book I’d advise doing a brief chapter breakdown – Chapter I is where your hero and heroine meet and Chapter XII is where they profess their love for one another and everything gets ironed out.  All you have to do is work out what happens to get them to that place and if you have some structure to refer to, you’ll stand less chance of becoming a victim of the dreaded mid-book slump.
  • Make sure you know your characters inside out.  How many brothers and sisters does your heroine have?  How did the hero used to spend Christmas when he was a little boy?  If your characters feel real, then they will come over as real to your reader.
  • Lastly, be able to describe your story in a single sentence – the “elevator pitch”.  This will help to focus you on what you’re trying to say when you’re writing.

Into the Hall of Vice (Bastards of London, Book 2) by Anabelle Bryant

I read INTO THE HALL OF VICE by the indomitable Anabelle Bryant several weeks ago, and at the time I wasn't able to put into words what I felt about the book. Sometimes things just get in the way. Now that I am back from a very inspiring time at the RT Booklovers convention, I feel the need to share a book that should be represented. First of all, Ms. Bryant's writing is superb. This author is a wonder at spinning a web to entrap the reader, and this story is one of her finest. So whether Anabelle Bryant is a new name to you, or you have read her tales in the past, THE BASTARDS OF LONDON series is a must read.

Despite his meager beginnings, Cole Hewitt has what many crave, good looks, money and power. Part owner of London's infamous Underground gaming hell, Cole may seem to have it all, but the one thing he actually craves, love. Bastard born and thrown into the streets by the peer father who wanted nothing to do with his by blow, Cole sets himself a high bar now after struggling to survive. On the outside it appears that Cole has it all, but he himself doesn't feel that way at all. Seeing his business partner find the love of his life give Cole pause to reflect on what he doesn't have, Cole's heart is still empty and wanting.

Once Lady Gemma Amberson, The Duke of Kent's sister, leaves off her mourning attire that has clouded her persona for the past two years, she is now determined to find out what exactly happened to her father. His death still fresh on her mind daily, was not a completely clear, and Gemma is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery.

A chance meeting between two strangers is enough to spark a fire between Cole and Gemma that begins a tumultuous journey of adventure and heartache... Which will win? You must read INTO THE HALL OF VICE by Anabelle Bryant to find out!

ALWAYS MY BABY by Martha Kennerson
1)      What is your favorite part about writing for Always My Baby?

When it comes to mystery, I’m a big fan of Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series.
8)      What book are you currently reading right now?

LUCAS by Delores Fossen
1)      What is your favorite part about writing LUCAS?
LUCAS is the 12th book in the Lawmen of Silver Creek series so I really enjoyed visiting with all the cowboy heroes from the previous stories. It was like going home to a family reunion.

2)      Is there anyone who you based Lucas and Hailey off of, or who you drew your inspiration from?
I was inspired by Rayland Givens from Justified. I thought he had that edge that I wanted Lucas to have.

3)      How many books have you written? Is there one that you would consider your favorite?
LUCAS is my 88th published Harlequin, and I’ve written 12 other books. It’s so hard to pick a favorite, but I think for now it’s BRANDED AS TROUBLE, an HQN that comes out July 1st.

4)      When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve been writing as long as I can remember, but I didn’t begin writing seriously until my kids were old enough to start to school.

5)      What is your favorite thing about writing contemporary romance?
It’s fun to “build” the ranch where my cowboy heroes and heroines live. And, of course, the best part is creating happily-ever-afters for them.

6)      What is the biggest misconception about your genre?
That the books are easy to write and all the same. They’re very different, and they’re definitely not easy. It takes a lot of work to pull a story together.

7)      What are a few of your favorite books? Do you have any recommendations?
I have SO many favorite books and authors. I love B.J. Daniels, Julie Miller and Lori Wilde. I also read Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

8)      What are your future projects are you working on?
I’m working on three new HQN books for my Wrangler’s Creek series. They’ll be out in 2018.

9)      Do you have any tips for people suffering from writer’s block?
I think it helps to make a schedule and then stick to it. That way, I know what I’m supposed to be doing every day.

10)  Do you have any advice for new writers?

Write as much as you can and experiment with various ways to do the same scene. That’s how to learn the best way to tell the story.
