A Whisper of Desire (The Disgraced Lords #4) by Bronwen Evans

Whenever I pick up a title by author, Bronwen Evans, I know I am in for an emotional roller coaster and a cutting edge story. This fourth book in the Disgraced Lords series is a nail biter I just couldn't put down.

So certain that she is going to marry the gentleman who has been courting her for weeks, Lady Marissa Hawkstone has blinders on when it comes to the man's true character. When her brother's best friend, the Maitland Spencer, the Duke of Lyttleton, who is also known by the ton as the Cold Duke, tells Marissa of her gentleman's duplicity she is angered and dismayed by what she finds out. She is also confused by Maitland's attempt at flirtation which he appears quite serious in pursuing. Marissa believed Maitland never even noticed her behind his cool and calm exterior.

Maitland decided months ago that he needed a wife, he even went to far as to suggest  to to his best friend, Sebastian that his sister, Marissa would be a good choice for his wife. When that idea is shot down by Sebastian, Maitland still has that little voice in his head that feels Marissa should be his wife. Maitland's upbringing was not ideal and he constantly lives in the shadow of his father's reputation for his proclivities and debauchery. Trying to be a better man, Maitland curbs his passions by keeping to a strict schedule with rule to keep him in check, but Marissa seems to bring out his passions and if he allows himself to feel, the flood gates may open and that is what Maitland doesn't want.

In addition to Maitland's personal worries, there is still the matter of a madwoman on the loose attempting to destroy all that Maitland and his friends, the Libertine Scholars, hold dear. Finding this evil woman is paramount, but leads are few and far between, with this danger knowing their every move. When Marissa awakens from a drug induced stupor, naked and in bed with Maitland, they quickly deduce that they have been manipulated into this ruinous occasion and the only way out in binding themselves in matrimony.

The expectations from this marriage between Maitland and Marissa cause issues that could lead to despair for while their passion and desire for one another quickly ignites, Maitland's holding back from his new wife will cause heartbreak unless they both come to terms with the past and look forward into the future.

The wait for A WHISPER OF DESIRE by Bronwen Evans was so worthwhile as this story is teeming with intrigue and passion, danger and need. Ms. Evans is expert in taking the readers through the spectrum of emotions with her carefully spun web. It is always a delight to see the charcters' journeys and through this author's insightful eyes with each and every tale. A WHISPER OF DESIRE  is a book that should not be missed!

A Visit With the Long Island Romance Writers

I don't often do editorial posts because I don't think that I am very good at writing them. But, I decided to throw down and give it a try because I had such a great experience this weekend with the LIRW. This wonderful group of authors and aspiring authors welcomed me with open arms.

A few months back, Long Island based author Jeannie Moon approached me about doing a joint panel  at one of the meetings. Being the extrovert I am, I wholeheartedly agreed. The wonderful thing about this panel was that it ended up being more like a chat, a give and take. The theme itself was about The Blogger/Author Relationship, which in itself has many facets. I loved this panel because I truly believe bloggers are essential when it comes to getting the word out about authors and the books they write.

Things were going easy when Jeannie brought up author etiquette, and how authors should approach and treat the bloggers who are willing to take them on. When author Pam Burford made a comment  about something her husband told her about how people should treat one another. Basically, what she said came down to "Don't be a dick", laughter filled the entire room, and that phrase became one of the themes of the afternoon, making all of us at ease with one another.

"Don't be a dick" is perfect when it comes to the blogger and author relationship and it most definitely goes both ways. Life should be so easy. I am sure that both authors, as well as bloggers like myself, have had some uncomfortable dealings with each other. Hopefully not often. My love of books and authors inspired me to start a blog. I had no thoughts of notoriety or dollar signs; it was the possiblity that I could share my love of romance and maybe someone would take what I said to heart and pick up the books I was talking about. Pure and simple.

At first I posted reviews of books I had read in the past. I had no clue about how to blog or what was relevant. As time went on, authors began to email me and ask if I could possibly read their books and review them, which I happily agreed to do since inevitably the author was sending me a free advanced reader copy (ARC) and boy, how we love those freebies. I really liked to review books I enjoyed reading and I welcomed most of the requests that came my way.

Presently, it's harder to sift through the dozens of emails that I get a week and I am sure that most bloggers feel this way. This is where the manner in which an author approaches a blogger comes into play. Sending out a mass email that's stiff and all all business does not get my attention. Making it personal really helps. Doing a little research about the blog before you send that email goes a long way. For instance, I have a note at the top of my blog stating what sub-genres of romance I am interested in reviewing at this time. Also, scrolling through and seeing what the blogger has been posting about is a tell. To be quite honest, if an author sent me an really nice email stating that they really enjoyed the blog and how the reviews were written, I probably would figure out a way to help them out. It's all about how the request was done. Being nice isn't that difficult, right?

So back to this wonderful panel. Some of what I just wrote about was discussed. Some questions were asked and hopefully answered in a manner that will help these great individuals. Being able to have discussions like this one is a pleasure and  there should be more of them. The romance community is such a great place to meet people and share ideas, a place to find something new and then share it. In the six or so years that I have been involved in this unique community, there have been some great experiences and some no so great experiences, but I wouldn't pass on either because both always give proper perspective. So when we think about dealing with one another, whether it's an author who needs help to promote their work, or a blogger who wants to have one of their favorite authors on their blog, "Don't be a dick" is bottom line.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALL AND A SPECIAL THANKS TO JEANNIE MOON AND THE LIRW FOR HAVING ME!

A MacKenzie Clan Gathering (MacKenzies & McBrides #8.5) by Jennifer Ashley

I've just realized, while reading A MACKENZIE CLAN GATHERING, that Ian and Beth are probably my very favorite hero and heroine since I started reading romance. With Ian MacKenzie there is no pretense, only the love he feels for Beth that infiltrates every pore of his being. Beth's love for him is unequaled. She understand the man completely and even with his eccentricities would never have him change. I have loved watching them grow as a couple and as a family with their three children. I have adored Ian's transformation from the MADNESS OF LORD IAN MACKENZIE to the Ian of ten years later. That being said, Jennifer Ashley's A MACKENZIE CLAN GATHERING earns a spot on my keeper shelf.

Ian MacKenzie and his family are back at Kilmorgan for eldest brother Hart's birthday festivities. They await the rest of the family and Ian is taking care of things while Hart is away. Ian awakens one night in complete unease, knowing that something is afoot. After making sure his wife and children are secure, he stumbles upon a crime in progress and he jumps into action. A group of thugs is stealing Hart's priceless art collection and Ian can't stop them alone, not if it means his family might be endangered.

While family members are notified and the authorities trickle in, including Ian's half brother, Inspector Fellowes, Beth and Ian welcome Beth's retired missionary and former brother-in-law, John Ackerley. Upon meeting Ian, Ackerley thinks he has a "cure" for Ian's "madness' and with all the troubles going on at Kilmorgan Castle, Ackerley distracts Ian with the possibility of being normal. Beth and the children are content with Ian as is, but his Beth allows Ian to explore without disruption.

When Ian discovers that a feud which began ages ago between the MacKenzies and a rival English family may be the center of the theft, he and Ackerley head out to confront the issue, but things get personal when an abduction takes place that changes the game entirely. Many lessons are learned throughout this must read adventure.

A MACKENZIE CLAN GATHERING by Jennifer Ashley is a fabulous addition to the MacKenzie saga. This tale makes me want to go back and read the entire series all over again and savor each and every tale.

Dukes Are Forever (The Secret Life of Scoundrels #1) by Anna Harrington

EXCERPT
“If she isn’t downstairs in five minutes,” Edward warned Mrs. Elston through gritted teeth, “I will go up to her room and drag her down myself!”
The old governess bristled. “As I told you, Miss Kate is feeling unwell—”
A sharp curse exploded from him, telling her exactly what he thought of Miss Kate’s sudden illness.
“Your Grace,” her brows shot up, offended, “with all due respect—”
He rolled his eyes, knowing that whatever she was about to say would lack all respect.
“—you have swept into our home without warning, upset both my little Katie and the entire household, and are now making demands as if you own the place.”
“I do own it,” he drawled.
“Brambly House is entailed,” she informed him pointedly. “It is owned solely by Miss Kate to be relinquished only to the gentleman she marries.” Her emphasis clearly implied that despite his title, she found him to be no gentleman. “If she wishes to forgo your company, you should have the decency to give her peace!”
She stood squarely in front of him and blocked the stairs like a bulldog guarding its dinner. While ordinarily he would have found that loyalty admirable, tonight he was ready to throttle her for it.
“Mrs. Elston,” he growled, tired from a long day of traveling and now hungry since dinner was an hour late, “if Miss Benton doesn’t come downstairs, I swear I’ll—”
“You will do what, your Grace?” a soft voice challenged from the landing.
He glanced up, and when he saw her, the rest of the threat vanished from his lips. Sweet Lucifer, she was a vision. Although a decade out of fashion, the ice-blue silk gown she wore was cut just carefully enough to tantalize without being improper, with its fitted bodice accentuating her slender waist and its neckline revealing a hint of firm breasts beneath. As she descended toward him, her upswept red hair shining like fire, the dress shimmered enticingly over her curves with each move.
She stopped two steps from the bottom, her eyes level with his and just the hint of a self-assured smile at her lips. The sweet scent of honeysuckle wafted down to him like a cloud, and his gut clenched with unbidden arousal.
The disheveled woman who greeted him earlier had transformed into a beautiful woman, like a caterpillar into a butterfly. She left him speechless.
            “You’ll do what?” she pressed.
His lips twisted impishly at his now-empty threat. “Throw you over my knee and spank you.”
“Your Grace!” Mrs. Elston swung her gaze at him, appalled that he would even suggest such a thing.
Kate raised her head defiantly, her green eyes blazing. “I’d like to see you try.”
Good God. His cock twitched at the temptation.
“Miss Kate!” Mrs. Elston blurted out, aghast at her charge’s scandalous behavior.
Ignoring the old governess and fighting back an amused chuckle, Edward held out his hand. “Truce?”
            She hesitated.
            “Until dessert at least?”
She placed her gloved hand into his and allowed him to help her down the last two steps and toward the dining room as she conceded, “Until dessert, your Grace.”
            “Edward, please,” he corrected.
“Then you must call me Kate,” she insisted, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “All my guardians do.”
“You have a lot of guardians, do you?” he asked dryly.
“Oh, yes.” She gave a flippant wave of her hand, the mocking gesture indicating how ludicrous she found their situation and her desire to be free of it. “Lately, it seems there’s a new one dropping by every day.”
He paused in mid-step, then slid her an irritated sideways glance as she continued walking, slipping her hand away from his arm to proceed him into the room. As his gaze roamed down her backside, the curves beneath the gown and the soft sashay of her hips once again reminded him that this was no child in need of a guardian. This was a woman.
Worse, he thought grimly as the man now responsible for guarding her reputation, she was beautiful. The moment she debuted, every man would set his sights on her. And it wouldn’t be with the intention of marrying her.
Heaven help him, he was in serious trouble.

KIMBERLY'S REVIEW:

Seeking revenge on the man who is responsible for killing his older brother and his brother's wife, Edward Westover, the Duke of Swarthmore beggars Phillip Benton who so thoroughly ruined, even has to sign all rights to his daughter over to the duke. Edward never wanted to become duke, but his brother's untimely death while Edward was away fighting the war, changes all plans Edward has for his future in one fell swoop. Now he has a to "handle" little Kate Benton.

Since her father has basically abandoned her, Kate Benton has been living life rather precariously without help of anyone. Phillip Benton continually badgers his daughter to sign the entailed home her mother's family over to him to no avail. It's all Kate has left and she won't give it up. So along with her faithful, but aging staff and her own persistence, Kate perserveres through thick and thin, until the day her world is toppled over by an overbearing man who comes to call. The pretentious man has come to claim all she holds dear and Kate is not willing to cede.

Edward is shocked to find that "little" Kate Benton is not the child he imagined, but quite a grown woman. So grown that she inspires thoughts Edward should put out of his head directly. Kate is so angry that Edward is causing such upheaval in her world that the two immediately begin to butt heads. Coming to an accord, however is a mission both Kate and Edward are game for, especially when kissing is involved.  Edward's ice begins to melt the more involved he becomes with Kate, but both of their pasts will cause serious issues when Kate disobeys Edward's order to have no communication with her scoundrel of a father.  After a passionate if not tumultuous night with Kate, Edward punishes her for her disloyalty by sending her away, but even without her presence, he can think of nothing else but her.

DUKES ARE FOREVER is the first book in Anna Harrington's , The Secret Life Of Scoundrels series and the first book I have read by this author. I must say, that I enjoyed this tale immensely and look forward to more from Ms. Harrington. Kate and Edward are wonderful and intriguing characters who are a pleasure to read. Their head butting is a necessary evil to their budding relationship and Edward's ignorance of the fact that Kate is still an innocent in the entire mess before them is telling. Watching the downfall and the resolution is a delight and makes the HEA even brighter. I do highly recommend DUKES ARE FOREVER.

To Wed His Christmas Lady (The Heart of a Duke #7) by Christi Caldwell

When an author takes a character from a previous book, who is hateful and pretentious and then transforms her into a loveable heroine with such finesse, this is a story worth reading from an author who should be on your must read list. Such is the case with TO WED HIS CHRISTMAS LADY by Christi Caldwell.

As the story begins, Lady Cara Falcot awaits at her finishing school for her father's carriage to retrieve her on the cusp of the Christmas holidays.   But that carriage never comes and the lady who has already built a wall of ice around her heart, continues on. Lady Cara's father once again has put yet another ache in her already tender heart. When she takes a carriage borrowed from another family, she ends up in a snow storm, stranded at an inn with people she would normally never consort with.

William Hargrove, the Marquess of Grafton has spent the last eight years shirking his familial duty. Betrothed to a woman he holds in dislike has him escaping England to live before he is tied down in an unhappy marriage. His sojourn is up and upon his return to England, Will winds up caught in the snowstorm and seeking refuge at an inn.  William is already present when a difficult young lady comes to the inn an causes upheaval immediately. Will finds the lady to be a nuisance, but of course there is always a story behind the facade.

Neither William nor Cara realize that they are betrothed to one another, each keeping their identities to themselves. During their stay at the inn, the pair aggravate one another while they become acquainted with one another and the realization that underneath the cool exteriors they present, is a person worth knowing. But William knows he has a bride waiting for him and Cara's fiance awaits her as well, so there is little or no future for the couple who soon find themselves with deep feelings for one another. William helps open Cara's heart that has been hidden by years of disappointment but will opening that heart only lead to it breaking when she loses Will?

I have to tell you that Lady Cara was truly a despicable character in Christi Caldwell's TO LOVE A LORD. The challenge of taking that despicable character and making the reader actually come to like her is one this author achieved with this wonderfully told story. There is definitely a lesson to be learned. Sometimes the facade presented hides the truth and with a little care and understanding that facade melts away leaving a wonder to be beheld. Such is the tale of William and Cara.

Poor Catherine Middlebrook is having quite the distressing time. She must find a proper husband before her family is ruined. Her spendthrift mother and family are for Catherine sacrificing herself for the better good. She has a type in mind and the tall, brooding Scotsman who is placed in her path is definitely not her type. He is too big and too much male for her.

Brooding Highlander, Alexander Waters has come to London to get his sister wed even if it has to be an Englishman. His feisty sister befriends the wily Catherine and both ladies begin to torment the man. Alex sees what Catherine is after, but he also sees that the seemingly proper and staid miss actually has quite the fire within that seems to come out whenever they are in each other's presence. Once Alex gets his head out of the clouds, he sees that Catherine is just what he needs and proving it to her is a exciting journey.

HOW TO SEDUCE A SCOT by Christy English is a truly delightful tale. It took a little bit to get going, but was full speed ahead when it really mattered. I loved how all of the characters play off one another. The give and take is great! This story has it all, intrigue, romance with a smidge of comedy. All in all a great read and I am looking forward to the next one!
